Tips for Talking to Your Doctor
Before your doctor prescribes a medication, let him or her know what else you are taking.  Bring a list of your current medications whether it has been prescribed by another doctor or non-prescription medications such as vitamins, herbal supplements or any over-the-counter drugs.

Helpful questions to ask your doctor:

What is the medication?
Why am I taking it?
Do I take it with food or on an empty stomach?
How often do I take it?
What time of day do I take it?
How long do I have to take it?
What should I do if I miss a dose or take too much?
What, if any, potential side effects should I watch for?

At home read labels carefully before taking any medication.  Store medications properly and keep them in their original containers.

Take the prescribed medication until it is gone, unless your doctor says it's okay to stop early.  Always throw away any unused or expired medication.  Never take someone else's medication.

Contact your doctor or pharmacist if new or unexpected problems or symptoms occur.  Before taking any over-the-counter or non-prescription medications, ask your doctor or pharmacist to avoid any bad drug interactions.

Prescription Refills
Please call your pharmacy before you are out of your medicine.  Sometimes before refilling certain prescriptions, your doctor may ask you to schedule an appointment.   Go to the same pharmacy consistently as they will have a complete record of all your medications.  This way the pharmacist can make sure a new prescription doesn't have bad interactions with other medications you are taking.

                    Prescription Drug Assistance Program

Sometimes affording prescription medicines can be difficult. That's why the
Duluth Family Practice Center offers our patients a Prescription Drug Assistance Program—to keep affordable medicines within your reach. This private and confidential program provides medicine free of charge to eligible individuals who do not have prescription drug coverage and who, without our assistance, could not afford needed medicines.

Typically these assistance programs require a doctor’s consent and proof of financial status. They may also require that you have either no health insurance, or no prescription drug benefit through your health insurance.  A single application may provide for up to one year of medicine free of charge to eligible individuals and an individual may reapply as many times as needed.  Please ask your physician for specific eligibility requirements and application information.
