The building that is home to the Duluth Family Practice Center and Duluth
Family Practice Residency Program is rich in history. During its
almost 30 years of service it has undergone three facelifts. The last
was a major expansion and renovation completed in the fall of 1998 and
totaled more than $2.3 million.
It started with the Waverly Apartment building. Built in 1926, the
brick building located on 8th Avenue East housed four apartments in affluent
style. In 1956 the Waverly was purchased by three Duluth neurosurgeons
(Drs. Nisswandt, Bullock and Pollard) for their surgical practice. The
physicians worked out of the apartments on the first floor while the second
story apartments remained occupied by tenants. The surgeons quickly
realized that the floor plan was not conducive to an efficient clinic and
purchased the vacant lot adjacent to the Waverly on the corner of 4th Street
and 8th Avenue East for a new clinic. Construction of the new facility
was completed in 1965 where the partners remained in practice for several
years.
The Duluth Family Practice Residency Program was founded in 1973 and was
looking for a physical location within walking distance of the hospitals.
The three neurosurgeons decided to close their practice and sold their
clinic to the program. The Duluth Family Practice Center and residency
program opened its doors in 1975 and graduated its first class in 1977.
Today the Duluth Family Practice Residency Program is one of the premier
Family Practice residency programs in the country.
